Since its formation in February, 1987, the Longlac Historical Society (LHS) has initiated, in the words of one citation, “one exciting activity after another”. The Ontario Historical Society presented the LHS
with the Scadding Award of Excellence for 1990.
The Society has developed and marketed an annual fund-raiser known as The Biggest Little Canoe Race in the World.
There is a permanent outdoor exhibit, the Tugalong, one of the first diesel-operated tug boats on Long Lake. It is located at the Visitor Information Centre on the highway.
The Society owns and operates a heritage building, the Longlac History Centre. There are displays and an archives that the public may view by making appointments with the LHS Executive.
A newsletter, The Kenogami Packet, is issued from time to time at the discretion of the Society. There is a free local distribution.
The Society seizes every opportunity to educate the public through open houses and public exhibits.
